Dark Green Melon Juice for Wild Superheroes

| 27 May 2015

Warning: this recipe is NOT your common juice or smoothie.

It is so packed with mega-alive-super-nutrients (is that even a word?:) from fresh wheatgrass, green algae, and citrus pith that it is one of those ‘special-occasion-superhero-power-inducing’ drinks. It requires a fair amount of effort to prepare, but it is the most excellent fuel for those important days in your life. Exams, meetings, performances, or sleepless creative nights; for being totally and powerfully YOU!

Whether you have a slow masticating juicer or a simple mechanical one – fresh wheatgrass, at least once in a while, is a GREAT idea. Spring is a natural season for wheatgrass and anything sprouting in general, there couldn’t be a better time to get a tray of wheatgrass (or grow it yourself) and juice it too!

Here’s our wild trick with wheatgrass:

Some people love the taste of pure wheatgrass, some people don’t. The taste depends, most of all, on quality – so try finding the best organic wheatgrass or grow your own in nutrient-rich soil.

We love mixing wheatgrass with other fruit or vegetable juice to make it more palatable and this combo is an instant winner. You’ve got to try it! (Oh and check out that colour!)

Ingredients

(serves 2-3)

  • 1 tray of wheatgrass (have no wheatgrass? Do not worry and read on, we have a replacement for you or use 3 TBLS of Wheatgrass powder instead in the last part of the recipe)
  • 1 whole organic Galia melon
  • 1 whole organic cucumber
  • 1.5 inch of fresh ginger
  • 1.5 inch of fresh turmeric
  • 1 whole unwaxed lemon
  • 1 whole unwaxed lime
  • 2 small and juicy really ripe pears
  • 60g of raw creamed coconut
  • 1 TBLS extra virgin coconut oil
  • 1 TBLS of green algae flakes (can replace with spirulina or chlorella)

Method

Slow Juice the wheatgrass (the whole tray is awesome!). Instead of wheatgrass (or if you don’t have a slow juicer) use whatever juicer you’ve got and make a simple green juice (celery, greens of your choice) as a base for this recipe. Set aside.

Blend (1) the melon (skin or no skin depends on you and the strength of your blender, peel it if you can’t get organic) and cucumber (also peel if not organic) along with ginger and turmeric, lemon and lime (whole – we’re getting in all the nutrition and flavour of the pith and zest) and two pears. You can put this blend through a mesh or plant-milk bag for smoother consistency or leave it whole for more filling, thicker smoothie.

Blend (2) Blend the wheatgrass with your blend 1 (either strained or unstrained) and 1 TBLS of coconut oil, creamed coconut and green algae flakes. Serve right away.
