Poppy and Black Mulberry Milk (Milk of Poppy)

| 16 February 2016

If you happen to be a fan of Game of Thrones, like us, you will know about the famous medicinal drink of the series: the milk of poppy where it is used as an all-round pain-killer and natural medicine.

Guess what, the truth is not too far from reality. Poppy seeds happen to be incredibly relaxing and healing for the nervous system. They are bursting with zinc, calcium, iron, copper, and B group vitamins as well as oleic which helps produce ‘good’ cholesterol. Wow!

In case you are wondering, poppy seeds do not have any sinister side effects of other poppy plant products, ya know what we are talking about.

From our experience, it is a perfect pre-sleep evening drink, especially for those that have problems relaxing or sleeping. It happens to be superbly delicious too!

(serves 2)

3/4 of a cup of poppy seeds (pre-soaked)

1 cup of black or white mulberries

1 tsp of vanilla essence

1/2 tsp of vanilla powder

1l chilled filtered water

pinch of sea salt

Pre-soak the poppy seeds in 4 cups of water for at least a couple of hours. Drain the soak water off through a sieve, pour the seeds into a blender and blend with a pinch of salt and just enough water to cover the seeds. Once you get a smooth, creamy consistency add a litre of chilled (spring or filtered) water and blend well.

Pour the mix through a nut milk bag or a fine sieve. Pour back the strained milk back into the blender add mulberries, vanilla essence, and blend well. Serve right away with an optional sprinkle of vanilla powder.
