What’s Behind the Colours of Neal’s Yard?

| 31 May 2019

This post has been brewing for a while. In fact, we couldn’t wait for a window of opportunity to write it. It is about our super colourful magical home.

Neal’s Yard is an extraordinary oasis of color, magic, playfulness, and heart in the middle of the city. It almost doesn’t make sense – and yet it is perfect.

Peaceful, exquisite, bohemian, unique, haven, vibrant, colourful, playful, unpretentious, retreat, sanctuary, oasis, spiritual, lifeline…These are just some of the words people have used to describe Neal’s Yard.

Many of you in London and a lot of people from all corners of the world pass by this magical special place when visiting.

Many of you, including us before we started Wild Food Café in the yard, would save this space as the extra special place to show our friends and visitors.

Now we love watching “new” people being guided into the yard and seeing their child-like awe and wonder when they see something completely unexpected in the middle of London.

As you can imagine, we are very much honoured and privileged to have been able to start our own wellbeing oasis there. We absolutely love to contribute and grow this special place and its abundant, playful community spirit.

So what is it about the yard, the magic of unexpected?

In the 70s Neal’s Yard consisted of a few derelict warehouses on the edge of the less than fashionable Covent Garden area.

Within a few years, it became a crazy hidden-away place with a bunch of small independent visionary businesses. The entrepreneur responsible, Nicholas Saunders, had no experience of running shops. All eight of the ventures Nicholas initiated in Neal’s Yard have survived decades and, to say the least, became iconic examples of small independent businesses.

-It became A seedbed for ideas about living a fulfilled life
-A green and peaceful communal place in central London
-A holistic ethos which nurtures creativity and wellbeing
-A collection of independent businesses with ethical values

Neal’s yard was a home of the UK’s first Wholefoods shop, Monmouth CoffeeNeal’s Yard DairyNeal’s Yard Remedies and the iconic Bakery for those that still remember it 🙂

There’s so much to say about Neal’s Yard – about the colours, trees, houses, special quotes, mirrors, the amazing energy and intention people put before us, the creativity and the spirit, the way all this sensory stimulation of the yard puts you right in the present moment  – but it is probably best experienced before we start sounding a little loony.

We would like to use this opportunity to invite you to a free-flow-community-gathering; Neal’s Yard Peace Meditation. This is held every first Sunday of the month, at 10.30 am. In the middle of the city, in the middle of the world. In the middle of YOU!

Just be there, holding space in your heart
sitting
standing
or gently moving
in the middle of our city
with other likeminded people

Nothing to do, just being the energy of PEACE.

Join in creating the consciousness shift!
